Mia

Look, it’s coming into view. That’s Nara Park, right?

Misaki

Yes. All these trees feel wonderful, and the morning air is still cool.

Mia

After that big hotel breakfast, a walk sounds just right.

Misaki

I’m not sure “big” quite does that breakfast justice.

Mia

Breakfast on a trip is part of the experience.

Misaki

That’s a very convenient excuse you’ve found.

Mia

Oh, a deer! They really do stroll around as if it were perfectly normal.

Misaki

There are some across the path too. They’re much closer than I expected.

Mia

Their faces look gentler than they do in photos.

Misaki

They’re cute, but they’re still wild deer, so don’t approach them too suddenly.

Mia

Got it. I’ll watch from a little farther away first.

Misaki

That distance looks about right.

Mia

That deer is looking at us.

Misaki

It may be looking at your hands, not your bag.

Mia

But I’m not holding anything yet.

Misaki

Maybe it’s looking for someone carrying shika senbei.

Mia

Shika senbei! Where can we buy some?

Misaki

I saw a stand near the entrance.

Mia

Let’s go. If I’m in Nara, I have to try feeding them at least once.

Misaki

You say “once,” but you already look incredibly excited.

Mia

They sell them over there. So these are shika senbei. They’re thinner than I expected.

Misaki

They’re special rice crackers made just for the deer.

Mia

I’ll buy a bundle. Do you want to hold some too, Misaki?

Misaki

I’ll pass for now. First, I’m going to see how you get on.

Mia

When you put it that way, I feel a little nervous.

Misaki

You’ll be fine if you stay calm and give them one cracker at a time.

Mia

All right, the first one goes to that little deer…

Misaki

Mia, behind you.

Mia

What? When did so many of them gather around me?

Misaki

The moment you showed them the crackers, they came from every direction.

Mia

Wait. I’ll feed you in order, so please give me just a little space.

Misaki

I’ll help. Mia, watch the deer on the left, and I’ll watch the ones on the right.

Mia

Thanks. All right, everyone on the left—one cracker each.

Misaki

Don’t hold the crackers too high. Hand them over one at a time from a low position.

Mia

Got it. Here you go. And the next one is for this deer.

Misaki

You’re doing well. Just be careful not to let your fingers get too close.

Mia

They eat so fast. That one is already watching the next cracker.

Misaki

You’re right. When our eyes meet, it looks as if it’s saying, “One more, please.”

Mia

How can I say no when it looks at me like that?

Misaki

Still, let’s make sure we don’t give too many in a row to the same deer.

Mia

Oh, it made another movement that looked like a bow.

Misaki

It looks as if it’s lowering its head because it wants a cracker.

Mia

What a polite deer. Should I bow back?

Misaki

Good idea. I’ll bow with you, and then we can slowly hand it a cracker.

Mia

Here you go… That makes three.

Misaki

There are still two more waiting behind it.

Mia

I’m much more popular than I expected.

Misaki

You really are. Mia may be the most popular person in Nara Park right now.

Mia

I like the sound of that. Let me stay popular for just a little longer.

Misaki

Then give me half. With both of us, we should be able to feed them more calmly.

Mia

Of course. Here’s your share, Misaki.

Misaki

Thanks. I wonder if I can become popular too.

Mia

Look, they’re coming over to you as well.

Misaki

They are. They’re even closer than I imagined.

Mia

You were so calm just a moment ago.

Misaki

I’m trying to stay calm, but seeing them this close does make me a little nervous.

Mia

It’s all right. This time I’ll stand beside you, and we’ll feed them together.

Misaki

Thanks. Will you help me give them the crackers one at a time?

Mia

Of course. I’m already an experienced hand.

Misaki

That’s reassuring. Then I’ll leave it to our experienced Mia.

Mia

Leave it to me. The two of us can definitely handle this.

Misaki

Yes. This time, let’s take it slowly together.

Mia

Oh, another one has come up behind you, Misaki.

Misaki

Just a moment. You’ll all get a cracker in turn, so don’t rush.

Mia

I’ll help too. Let’s start with this deer.

Misaki

Thanks. Being surrounded so suddenly really is a little nerve-racking.

Mia

It’s okay. We’ll do exactly what you taught me—one cracker at a time.

Misaki

Yes. I think I can stay calm with you here.

Mia

But up close, their eyes are so beautiful.

Misaki

They are. That’s all the more reason to be gentle and quiet so we don’t frighten them.

Mia

The shika senbei are all gone. We spent longer with the deer than I realized.

Misaki

We did. Let’s head to Tōdai-ji soon. I’d like to take our time walking along the approach.

Mia

It feels strange that such a famous temple is right here in the park.

Misaki

The area around Nara Park is full of historic places, including Tōdai-ji and Kasuga Taisha.

Mia

The deer aren’t simply animals that happen to live in the park, are they?

Misaki

No. They’re said to have been treasured since ancient times as messengers of the gods.

Mia

So they’ve been protected as part of Nara’s landscape.

Misaki

Exactly. They’re still wild animals today, so keeping a respectful distance is important.

Mia

Now I understand why we mustn’t give them anything other than shika senbei.

Misaki

For the deer’s health, it’s best to feed them only what’s permitted.

Mia

If we truly care about them, then we need to follow the rules.

Misaki

You learned how to behave around the deer very quickly today, Mia.

Mia

That’s because I was with you. Next time, I’d like to try being your guide.

Misaki

I’ll look forward to it. For now, let’s head to the Nandaimon Gate together.

Mia

Look. Is that the Nandaimon Gate?

Misaki

Yes. It’s enormous when you see it up close.

Mia

Those thick pillars rise all the way to the roof. Looking up might make my neck ache.

Misaki

I read that the present Nandaimon Gate was rebuilt during the Kamakura period.

Mia

So it has been standing here for more than eight hundred years?

Misaki

Yes. It was apparently completed in 1203, along with the statues inside the gate.

Mia

You mean those huge statues standing on either side of the gate? They’re incredibly powerful.

Misaki

They’re the Kongō Rikishi guardian statues. Agyō has its mouth open, while Ungyō has its mouth closed.

Mia

You’re right. They guard the gate together, but their expressions are completely different.

Misaki

I heard they’re both about 8.4 meters tall.

Mia

The muscles and even the folds of their clothing look ready to move at any moment.

Misaki

And Unkei, Kaikei, and their team are said to have made them in only sixty-nine days.

Mia

Sixty-nine days? They made two statues this enormous?

Misaki

Apparently, many Buddhist sculptors worked together on both statues at the same time.

Mia

So they embody not just one person’s genius, but the combined skill and strength of many people.

Misaki

When you think of it that way, you can almost see the bonds between people within their power.

Mia

A moment ago we were laughing, surrounded by deer. Here, our voices naturally grow quieter.

Misaki

Maybe that’s the joy of travel—encountering so many different feelings in a single day.

Mia

Is that huge building beyond the Nandaimon Gate the Great Buddha Hall?

Misaki

Yes. The current hall was rebuilt in the Edo period, yet it is still one of the world’s largest wooden buildings.

Mia

If you say “yet,” does that mean the old one was even bigger?

Misaki

Yes. The present Great Buddha Hall was rebuilt with a narrower frontage than the original.

Mia

And it’s already enormous. The former view must be beyond anything we can imagine.

Misaki

It will probably feel even larger once we go inside. Let’s look around quietly.

Mia

…It’s huge. It feels completely different from seeing it in a photograph.

Misaki

It’s said to be about fifteen meters tall.

Mia

Looking up from below, it feels almost too large to be in the same space as us.

Misaki

Its formal name is Rushana Buddha, and it represents a Buddha who illuminates the world with the light of wisdom and compassion.

Mia

Knowing what “illuminating the world with light” means makes its expression seem gentler.

Misaki

Construction of the Great Buddha in Nara began in earnest in 745, and the eye-opening ceremony was held in 752.

Mia

They made a Buddha this enormous in only about seven years?

Misaki

At the time, disease and conflict were widespread. It was built with the hope that people could live in peace.

Mia

So it wasn’t simply about creating something huge. It carried a wish for peace.

Misaki

Yes. It was a vast undertaking made possible by calling on many people to help.

Mia

It moves me to think that countless small efforts came together to create something this immense.

Misaki

Both the Nandaimon statues and the Great Buddha preserve not only centuries of history, but also the hopes of countless people.

Mia

Looking up at it makes my own worries feel small.

Misaki

Perhaps that’s because we’re standing in the same place where people long ago entrusted their hopes.

Mia

I didn’t expect a trip to make me feel this peaceful.

Misaki

Neither did I. I’m glad I could see this view with you, Mia.

Mia

Me too. I don’t want to forget either the laughter when the deer surrounded us or the quiet moments we spent looking up here.

Misaki

Nara gave us both lively memories and peaceful ones today.

Mia

We took our time looking around Tōdai-ji, and now it’s already afternoon.

Misaki

We stayed longer than I expected. Shall we rest for a while, then head back toward Nara Park?

Mia

Let’s do that. I’d also like to look through some of the photos we took today in the shade.

Misaki

It’s cool under the trees, and the breeze feels lovely.

Mia

We’ve walked a lot, so this is the perfect place for a short rest.

Misaki

Ever since we came back to the park, that deer has been watching us.

Mia

It has. But we’re out of senbei, so let’s simply watch it quietly… Are we really out? Misaki, show me your right hand.

Misaki

…I saved this one because I thought I’d give it to a deer just before we left.

Mia

I see. Now I understand why that deer won’t leave your side.

Misaki

Maybe it noticed that I was holding something in my right hand.

Mia

Once you give it that last one, the shika senbei really will be all gone.

Misaki

All right. Here you go.

Mia

It looked as if it bowed. Do you think it was thanking us?

Misaki

Let’s believe that. It will make this a gentle memory that feels uniquely Nara.

Mia

Nara was wonderful today. Is it about time to head back to the hotel?

Misaki

Yes. But first, let’s take one photo together.

Mia

Good idea. I want this picture to hold both the lively and the quiet moments from today.

Misaki

So do I. All right—our final photo of the day.

Mia

Let’s come back together someday.

Misaki

Yes. Next time, I’d like to walk through Nara with you in another season.

Mia

By the way, where are we going tomorrow?

Misaki

That’s still a secret. Here’s a clue: something red continues all the way up a mountain.

Mia

Something red? That tells me almost nothing. Can I have one more clue?

Misaki

You’ll find out tomorrow morning. Just don’t forget to wear comfortable walking shoes.
